What is acne vulgaris?
Chronic inflammation of the pilosebaceous unit
the cutibacterium acnes bacteria is felt to play an important role in acne
What makes up the pilosebaceous unit (2)?
- Hair follicule
- Sebaceous gland
How is acne vulgaris treated?
- Benzoyl peroxide (topical)
- Topical/ oral retinoids
- Topical/ oral antibiotics
- Contraceptive pill (for females)
What is an example of an oral retinoid?
Isotretinoin
When can isotretinoin not be used?
During pregnancy (teratogenic)
Example of oral antibiotic for acne vulgaris?
Lymecycline
Example of topical antibiotic for acne vulgaris?
Clindamycin
What is an example of an oral contraceptive used for acne vulgaris?
Co-cyprindiol
What are the two types of chest infection?
- Pneumonia
- Acute bronchitis
How is pneumonia diagnosed?
Usually clinically - crackles on the lungs. This usually corresponds to consolidation on X-ray.
How is acute bronchitis treated?
Rest + fluids (unless more severe or immunocompromised)
What are some symptoms of acute stress reactions (3)?
- Anxiety
- Flashbacks/nightmares
- Fear/ helplessness
How long is the duration of symptoms in an acute stress reaction?
< 1 month
Symptoms of allergic rhinitis (4)?
- Itchy nose
- Sneezing
- Blocked nose
- Red watery eyes
Allergic rhinitis treatments (2)?
- Antihistamines
- Steroid nasal sprays
