A
- cardiotoxic and secondary liver damage
- damages seminiferous tubules and reduces male’s fertility
- binds to proteins, amino acids, iron
- only FREE gossypol is toxic
- causes protein malnutrition, inhibits enzymes, and interferes w/ hemoglobin synthesis
- heat changes toxic free gossypol to less toxic protein-bound gossypol
- iron salts decrease toxicity by increasing gossypol inactivation and excretion
