What does GORD stand for?
Gastro-oesophageal reflux Disease
What is GORD?
The passage of gastric contents into the oesophagus.
What is GORD the commonest cause of in infancy?
Vomiting
Why is GORD very common in infancy?
The gastro-oesophageal sphincter is still developing.
How does GORD present in infancy?
- Milky vomits/ regurgitation after feeds.
- Crying/irritability
- Arching of the back
- Drawing up of the knees into the chest
What actions does the child do with GORD?
- Arching of the back

Up until what age does GORD typically tend to occur?
8 weeks
What is the conservative management of GORD in infants?
- Keep baby at 30 degree head up
- Burping after feeds
- Ensure baby isn’t being overfed
- Try thickening formula
What medical management would you give for GORD?
Alginates
What would you not give at the same time as the alginates?
Thickened formula
What alginates can be used in the medical management of GORD in an infant?
• Infant Gaviscon
When would you start a child on a PPI?
After trying an alginate with no/ very little improvement
What PPI might you prescribe?
Omeprazole
When would you perform surgery?
In severe cases where the baby is failing to thrive and medical management has failed
What surgery can be done for severe GORD?
Fundoplication
