Goniometry Flashcards
What does goniometry do?
defines the quantity of joint motion whether active or passive
What is AROM?
active range of motion; arc of motion through which a joint passes when moved by muscles acting on a joint
What is PROM?
passive range of motion; arc of motion through which a joint passes when moved by an outside force
What does a goniometer?
tool used to measure body joint’s range of motion (ROM) in each plane of movement
What is the fulcrum placed?
it is aligned along the axis of movement of the joint (often a specific landmark such as acromion of the shoulder)
Where is the stationary arm placed?
placed parallel to the longitudinal axis of a proximal segment (point of reference)
Where is the moveable arm placed?
follows the motion and is placed parallel to the longitudinal axis of the moving distal joint
Why do we measure ROM? ( 4 reasons)
- supports effective clinical reasoning
- defines the scope of clinical problems
- provides baselines to monitor progress
- allows therapists to summarize changes and focus on areas of treatment
What factors affect joint mobility? (6)
- genetic disposition
- activities
- health of the individual
- age
- gender
- anxiety or stress
What is end feel?
structures that limit the amount of motion at a joint is called end feel
How does the end feel feel?
can sometimes be firm, soft or hard in normal joints
Pathological end feels can be?
can be springy blocks, spasms, spasticity and muscle guarding
What is manual muscle testing?
the application of resistance by the tester and the active contraction of the muscle by the client
How is manual muscle testing performed on muscles?
several muscles can be tested as a group that produce a specific movement or individual muscles can be tested
Why do we measure muscle strength?
- Evaluating level of impairment
- Establishing a baseline for treatment
- Monitoring progress
