Glossary of Terms X Flashcards
Set Up
Raising of the temperature set point for the conservation of cooling energy during unoccupied periods
Subbase
Part of a thermostat that is mounted to a wall, to which all of the interconnected wiring is attached
Swing
Actual change in temperature of a conditioned space which is the difference between overshoot and undershoot.
System Lag
Time lapse for the heating or cooling cycle to start or stop causing overshoot or undershoot of the set point.
Thermistor
Semiconductor that will vary its resistance with a change in temperature.
Thermostat
A temperature actuated switch.
Undershoot
Conditioned space temperature that is lower than desired due to system lag.
Wind Chill
The cooling effect of the movement of air at a high velocity.
Alternation
A single period sine wave that increases from zero to it’s maximum and returning to zero, all in one direction.
Amplitude
The measurement of the magnitude of a sine wave from zero
Cycle
Two complete alternation of an alternating current measured in hertz. (Hz)
Frequency
The rate if time at which alternating current changes it’s direction of flow expressed in terms of cycles per second. (60 cycle power changes direction 120x’s per sec.)
Magnitude
The size or numerical value if a wave form or graph
Phase
The number of current alternating at different times in alternating current
Power
The rate at which work or mechanical energy is performed
