Ambulance
Motorvehicles designed and equipped for the transportation of a person or persons in accordance with the Transportation by Ambulances Act. Where an ambulance uses the regulated audible and optical warning signals this vehicle is categorized as an emergency vehicle, whereas without these signals the ambulance is a normal motorvehicle.
Aqueduct
An aqueduct is where a road passes under a waterway. Aqueducts can be made of many different types of materials, such as brick, concrete, metal or wood, and constructed in a variety of ways, for instance as tunnels, canals or bridges.
Articulated bus
An articulated bus (a motor bus or trolley bus), is a bus which is articulated, essentially meaning it bends in the middle. It is usually a single-deck design, and comprises two rigid sections linked by a pivoting joint. This arrangement allows a longer legal overall length than rigid-bodied single-decker buses, and hence a higher passenger capacity, while still allowing the bus to manoeuvre adequately on the roads of its service route.
Articulated lorry
An articulated lorry, also referred to as an “artic”, is a combination of a tractor unit pulling a semi-trailer; at the rear of the semi-trailer, attached to the tractor unit, the yellow registration plate starts with an “O”, which is Dutch for “Oplegger” = semi-trailer.
Authorized Body
By Authorized Body (Bevoegd Gezag) we are referring to the legal entity as mentioned in article 18, sub 1, of the Wegenverkeerswet 1994, i.e. the Dutch Road Traffic Act (RTA).
Authorized persons
Authorized persons are the (military) police, traffic inspectors, traffic officers/regulators, immigration and customs personnel etc.
Bijzondere bromfietsen
“Bijzondere bromfietsen” are “Special types of mopeds”; the Segway, Stint, Swing, Trikke and Zappy 3 are all classed as special types of mopeds which are also motor carriages. The Minister of Infrastructure and Environment (in Dutch: de minister van I & M - Infrastructuur en Milieu) determines whether a vehicle will be admitted on public roads, and if so which rules will apply.
Brommobiel (mobility car)
The mobility car is a four-wheel moped with an enclosed compartment where passengers are carried. The mobility car looks like a small car and has a yellow registration plate to the rear just like the moped. The speed of this vehicle has been limited to 45 km/h, prohibiting use of motorroads and motorways.
