What is standing still?
if you do stop your car voluntarily then it is standing still.
-It may be divided into standing still for a short while or standing still for a longer period of time
Standing still for a short while
- standing still in order to allow passengers to get in or out immediately
- standing still in order to load or unload goods immediately
*driver must remain with the vehicle and doesn’t stand still longer than is strictly necessary
what is parking?
All other types of voluntary stopping is called parking
- putting vehicle in a space or in front of your house and leaving it there
- Parking also means stopping for a short moment at a shop to do your shopping or staying in the car to wait for a passenger
Where to stand still?
in appropriate places such as parking lanes or parking spaces.
- Be on right side of road
- Left is allowed but not advised unless no other option
- One ways it’s okay to do on left side because no oncoming vehicles (though be careful of bicycles etc)
Prohibited parking by signs
Not allowed to park or stand still
-If sign has supplementary road sign with an arrow, it means the prohibition only applies in the direction indicated by the arrow
-along with signs E1 and E2, there are other places you can’t park..
Parking bays are the exception
You may park in parking bays…
Stopping prohibitions
No stopping when:
- bends, slopes under flyovers etc
- sections on road for other road users (footpaths, cycle paths etc)
- junctions/level crossings
- pedestrian crossings
- on or within 5 meters of pedestrian crossing
- bicycle lanes
- bus lanes/routes
- not on roadway next to either
- bus stops
- along entire length of block marking.. if no block marking not within a distance of 12 meters.. May drop someone off/pick up if no bus is impeded but have to move immediately if bus comes
- Yellow solid lines
- tunnels
Yellow broken line
No parking but may drop off/pick up or unload/load quickly
Pedestrian priority areas
only park on own premises
Roads with right of way
No parking, but can park on verge if necessary
Double parking
No double parking, parking alongside parked cars in parking space or lay-by beside roadway
No parking zones
- red circle with red line across and blue inside
- Only allowed to park in designated road sections.
Disc parking zone
- only allowed if use parking disc
- indicated by ‘parkeerschijf zone’
- indicated by blue line
- parking ticket (disc) may only be used for vehicles on more than two wheels and must be placed behind the windshield
- not allowed to park longer than indicated on parking sign
Parking meter
topping up is not allowed
Central parking meter
prints ticket to tell you how long allowed depending on money put in. Put ticket on windscreen
Underground/multistory car park
ticket barriers
Parking on slope
-Hand brake and put car in first gear
Parking offenders
you endanger others by parking in bad places, and risk damage to your own vehicle
-police tend to act strictly against this and will likely get towed or wheel clamped and pay fine
