Glossary Flashcards
Analyse
Study something to discover and evaluate its features
Anthropometrics
Body measurement data
Batch
A set number of identical products that are made together
Binding
Binding is used to hold sheets of paper together in the form of a book
Biodegradable
Something that will decay over time e.g. Paper (glass, metal and most plastics are NOT biodegradable)
Board
Thick paper weighing over 200 grams per square metre (200 gsm)
BSI
British standards institution. It sets standards for the quality and safety of products and methods. A product that meets these standards can display the kitemark.
Built-in obsolescence
When something is designed so that it becomes useless or out of date quickly
CAD/CAM
Designing and manufacturing using a computer
Colour fusion
When tiny dots of different colours really close together blend into a new colour
Complementary
Complementary colours are found opposite each other on the colour wheel, e.g. Green and red, yellow and purple and blue and orange
Contrasting
Constructing colours are colours that stand out against each other
Copyright
Legal protection which prevents copying of written, drawn or recorded work
Corporate identity
The image that people have of a company e.g. It’s personality, style and brand
Corrugated
With a ridged or grooved surface
Crating
Drawing in 3D by starting with a box and taking bits off or adding bits on
Design brief
The instructions that the client gives to the designer about what they want the product to be like
Design specification
A list of conditions that a product should meet
Ergonomic
Easy and comfortable for people to use
Finishes
Finishes protect a product from dirt and damage and improve its looks
Finite
A finite resource is one that will run out eventually, e.g. Crude oil
Fixings
Fixings are used to hold different components/parts of a product together
Freehand
Drawing without using any equipment - only a pen or pencil
Gap in the market
An area where there aren’t any products available to meet people’s needs
Geometric
Geometric shapes are simple, regular shapes like squares and circles
GSM
Grams per square metre, the way of showing the thickness of paper or board
Highlight
Lighter colouring used in drawings to show a surface facing the light
Horizontal
Horizontal lines run left to right
Hue
Another word for colour
Input device
Something used to enter data into a computer, e.g. A scanner
Laminated
Covered with a layer of another material
Manipulate
Alter in some way, e.g. Change the colours in a CAD drawing
Manufacturing specification
A manufacturing specification tells a manufacturer exactly how to make a product
Market research
Asking the target market what they like or dislike about products, to help you with your design
Mock-up
A full-scale model made of cheap materials used to check the layout of a design
Model
A practise version of a product that you make during the development stage. It’s likely to be made from Easy-to-work materials and might be scaled down in size
Net
A 2D shape that can be folded to make a 3D object. Also called a surface development
Output device
Something used to transfer data out of the computer, often as a ‘hard copy’ or product
Patent
Legal protection that prevents people copying the design of a new invention
Perspective drawing
Drawing in 3D, so that things that are further away look smaller
Pictorial drawing
Drawing in 3D
Product life-cycle
The stages a product goes through, from introduction to evolution or decline
Prototype
A full-size, working, one-off model of a design. A prototype is built to allow evaluation of the product before starting manufacturing in quatity
Registered design
Legal protection that prevents someone copying a designs shape and appearance
Rendering
Adding shading and/or colour to a drawing to make it look more realistic
Risk assessment
Identifying potential hazards and the precautions needed to minimise ricks before work starts
Sketch
A simple, freehand drawing
Smart material
A material that changes its properties in response to a change in the environment
Sustainable
A sustainable process or material is one that can be used without causing permanent damage to the environment or using up finite resources, e.g. Sustainable wood comes from forests where fast-growing tees are chopped down and replaced
Target market
The group of people who you want to sell your product to
Tessellation
Fitting as many nets as possible on to a piece of material to reduce waste
Thermochromic
Thermochromic materials change colour with heat
Thermoplastics
Plastics that can be melted and re-shaped over and over again
Tone
How light or dark a colour is
Trademark
Legal protection that prevents people copying the symbols, logos or slogans that represent a company
Vanishing point
A point in the distance (usually on the horizon) where parallel lines seem to meet
Vertical
Vertical lines run up and down
Working drawing
A detailed scale drawing that shows all the dimensions of each part of a product, and the materials from which components are to be made, etc
Adhesive
Something used to stick things together
