What is privatisation?
Making a public sector private, more like a business and more profit making

-Schools are more like a business

-Can be seen through academies

Evaluating privatisation
Expressed concern that companies could influence the curriculum, favours subjects which have a more obvious link to the current employment market (e.g. STEM subjects), rather than more creative/discursive subjects like Drama, Arts and Humanities
Profits have become the main goal and less-profitable courses are cut as a result
Stephen Ball talks about the ‘Cola-isation’ of education. The ability of companies to advertise to students via education – examples would be Apple iPads in schools and products in vending machines.
Academies can hire unqualified and untrained teachers (whom they can pay less) – concerns this could lower standards.
What are some direct impacts of globalisation?
-Wider variety of schools e.g free schools and academies
-National Lit and Maths campaigns have ben introduced to compete in a global workplace
-Additional funding for maths and science due to lower status in PISA rankings.
What are some indirect impacts of globalisation?
-Global risks – Introduced the teaching of British values and PREVENT
-Marketisation and Privatisation – UK Universities have campuses in other countries & as a result of free trade markets.
-Increased travel – attracts students across the world. International students pay higher fees.
-Increased funding around ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and EAL (English as an Additional Language) to enable them to get a Maths and English qualification (GCSE equivalent) to become part of the UK workforce.
How has globalisation changed school environments?
-Teaching and Learning- teaching techniques have changed through global research e.g. growth mindset
-Changes to curriculum influenced by a global outlook or changes in other countries e.g. inclusive/IT/Linear A Levels/RS/Languages
-School Facilities e.g. prayer rooms/food served/uniform which takes into account others’ cultural norms/EAL (English as an Additional Language) support
-Opportunities e.g. exchange trips/teacher training/international students
