What does Durkheim say?
The education system creates a social solidarity
Education prepares children for wider society
Taught specialist skills
Education is society in miniature- hidden curriculum, punctuality, hierarchy, rules and punishment
What does Parsons say?
Secondary socialisation, education acts like a bridge between the family to wider society
Particularisyic views- unique to the child
Universalistic views- everyone follows them
Meritocracy- everyone is given an equal opportunity to succeed
Schools also ‘sift and sort’ pupils based on their abilities into categories relating to future jobs
What did Davis and Moore say?
Role allocation
Some equality is necessary to ensure high ability pupils get the best jobs in society
This will encourage people to work harder to fight for higher jobs
