- Third world countries tend to be bigger and fewer. There is often a primate city much larger than other cities in the country, where there will be an international airport and other facilities
- Urbanisation has not always been always been accomplished by industrialisation city dwellers often make a living from informal sector work rather than being formally employed.

A
- Sees the growth of cities as an essential part of economic growth
- Cities provide a labour force
- Important for promoting cultural change, since removing from countryside - exposing western values

- Colonialism has made it impossible for developing countries to follow in the footsteps of the developed world
