Glaciers - Arran Conflicts Flashcards
1
Q
waste management & litter
A
- litter bins are removed in remote areas bc its diff to regularly empty + supported by messaging on cairgnorms website
- mainly effective as most ppl aim not to leave trace when outdoors, however small minority end up littering
- park rangers can fine ppl caught littering
2
Q
dog walkers vs conversation
A
- an offence to disturb capercaillie while lekking, nesting ir rearing their young = reduces capercaillie disturbed/killed by dogs
- only 542 capercaillie left in scot, so legistation needed, but hard to enforce in moorland of cairngorms
- signposts on gates to remind ppl to keep dogs on leads in grouse moors, esp btw apr & aug
3
Q
traffic management
A
- over 25 parks in cairngorms run by organisations eg RSPB, land scotland etc
- effective in reducing no of cars parked on narrow country road = improves traffic flow & raises funds for maintenance
- one way system near ski = improved traffic flow, ski shuttle bus in winter = less priv vehicles on road = less accidents from icy conditions
4
Q
second home ownership
A
- second home ownership makes houses pricces rise dramatically = locals cant afford home = the local dev plan for cairngorms includes provision for new affordable housing, somewhat subsidised by gvmt
- plans to build 60 affordable homes for sale/rent in the park over next few yrs
- one scheme makes buyers prove they lived in an area 5yrs before property can be purchased
