GI Tract Structure and Function Flashcards
How is chewing controlled?
Voluntary - skeletal muscles of mouth/jaw
Reflex: contraction of jaw muscles in response to pressure of food against gums, hard palate and tongue
What are the three pairs of salivary glands?
Parotid, submandibular and sublingual
What components make up saliva?
Water, mucins, amylase, electrolytes and lysozyme
What is the parasympathetic system’s effect on salivary secretion?
It stimulates release of profuse watery salivary secretion
What is the sympathetic system’s effect on salivary secretion?
It stimulates a small volume of viscous salivary secretion with a high mucus and amylase content
What part of the brain controls swallowing?
Swallowing centre (medulla)
What are the functions of the stomach?
- Temporary storage of ingested material
- Dissolve food particles and initiating digestion
- Controls delivery of contents to small intestine
- Sterilising ingested material
- To produce intrinsic factor (B12 absorption)
