GI: Gastric Secretions Flashcards
Parietal cells (oxyntic) secrete?
Gastric Acid (HCL) Intrinsic Factor (IF)
Chief cells secrete?
Pepsinogen
Mucous cells secrete?
Mucus
Bicarbonate (HCO3-)
G cells secrete?
Gastrin
Cells of the Body and Fundus?
Parietal cells (HCl, IF) Chief cells (Pepsinogen)
Cells of the Entire Stomach (particularly Antrum)?
Mucus cells (Mucus, Bicarbonate)
Cells of the Antrum and Duodenum?
G cells (Gastrin)
What does Gastric Acid (HCl) do?
Aids in digestion
Activates Pepsinogen into Pepsin
Kills pathogens
What does Intrinsic factor (IF) do?
Binds to Vit. B12
–> Leads to its uptake in the Ileum
What does Pepsinogen do?
Zymogen for Pepsin
Digests protein at a pH (1.0 - 3.0)
What does Mucus do?
Protects Mucosa from Acidic environment and Pepsin
What does Bicarbonate (HCO3-) do?
Neutralizes acid
What does Gastrin do?
Increases secretion of H+, Pepsinogen, Histamine
Trophic on Gastric mucosa
Increases Gastric motility
What regulates Gastric Acid (HCl)?
Stimulus: Gastrin, ACh (Vagus), Histamine
Inhibits: Low pH, Prostaglandins, GIP secretion ( - fb), Somatostatin
What regulates Intrinsic Factor (IF)?
Stimulus: Gastrin, ACh (Vagus), Histamine
Inhibits: Low pH, Prostaglandins, GIP secretion ( - fb), Somatostatin
