what are the stages of GORD

A
  • acute- presents as minor heartburn
  • chronic- presents with heartburn, difficulty swallowing (dysphasia) or painful swallowing (odynophagia), acid/ water brash, saliva and stomach acid, chronic cough, pain, can lead to laryngitis and sinusitis

what are the causes of GORD

A
  1. decreased sphincter tone- how tight the sphincter between the oesophagus and stomach is
  2. delayed gastric emptying and increased intraabdominal pressure- the stuff in your stomach stays there for longer
  3. with a loose sphincter and lots in the stomach is causes the stomach content to come back up

what is the pathophysiology of GORD

A

acid erodes the mucosa of the oesophagus which can lead to ulceration, strictures and barrett’s oesophagus (cellular change) which can lead to cancer

A
  1. acute- upset stomach caused from drugs, poisons and infection. will heal in a few days
  2. chronic- caused from an autoimmune disease, infection and anything that chronically irritates the stomach lining. will heal with progressive atrophy/ loss of gastric cells
