GI 3 Flashcards
How can a cholecystectomy cause diarrhoea?
This disturbs the usual cycle of bile release and bile acid reabsorption.
This results in too much bile progressing to the large intestine, where it causes more water and salts to be lost in the stool and a faster transit time of stool through the intestines.
Mx of bile acid malabsorption?
Cholestyramine –> binds to bile acids and promotes their reabsorption into the cycle of bile acid production, reducing diarrhoea.
Cancer in coeliac vs H. pylori?
Coeliac –> enteropathy associated T cell lymphoma
H. pylori –> MALT lymphoma
What is fetor hepaticus?
sweet and fecal breath - a sign of liver failure
TIBC in iron deficiency anaemia vs anaemia of chronic disease?
Iron deficiency anaemia –> high
Anaemia of chronic disease –> low/normal
Is there follow up after H. pylori mx if symptoms have resolved following test and treat?
