GI Flashcards
Loperamide
Opioid receptor agonist, increases transit time
Racecadotril
Inhibits enkephalinase so prolongs action of enkephalins which act at opioid receptors. Reduces hyper secretion without affecting transit time
Antacids ie Gaviscon
Neutralise acid
Alginates ie sodium bicarbonate, magnesium and aluminium salts, simeticone, sodium alginate
Increase viscosity of stomach contents reducing symptoms of reflux
Sucralfate, misoprostol
Promote mucosal defense (for reflux). Misoprostol is a prostaglandin analogue
Metoclopramide, domperidone
Gastric stimulants
H2 receptor antagonists (cimetidine), proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole)
Reduce acid production
Function of COX 1
Prostaglandin production, protection of gastric mucosa and platelet function
Function of COX 2
Pain, inflammation, fever via prostaglandin release
