Germination Flashcards
Definition of germination
A process, controlled by enzymes, in which the embryo from the seed begins to develop into a new young plant.
Function of the seed coat
Serves as protection from chemical damage and pathogen entry. Enzymes cannot break down the coat.
Definition of the plumule
The embryo shoot
Definition of the radicle
The embryo root
Factors needed for germination
Optimum water levels
Optimum oxygen levels
Optimum temperature
Too much water causes…
Degradation of the seed
Too little water causes…
Cells do not reach turgidity. There is not enough pressure to break the seed coat.
Too much oxygen causes…
Oxidation of seed, leading to a breakdown of the seed.
Too little oxygen causes…
Reduced aerobic respiration, meaning the seed will not be able to release energy.
Too high temperatures…
Enzymes to denature
Too low temperature means…
There’s not enough thermal energy causing a decrease in chemical reactions
