Ecology (mocks) Flashcards
1
Q
Define a population
A
The number of organisms of the same species living in an area
2
Q
Define a community
A
Multiple populations living and interacting in the same area
3
Q
Define a habitat
A
The place where an organism lives
4
Q
Define an ecosystem
A
The interaction between a community of living organisms and their environment.
5
Q
Why is only ~10% of energy transferred onto each trophic level?
A
- organisms rarely eat every part of the organism they are consuming
- energy used for movement
- energy used to generate heat
- energy used for metabolic processes
6
Q
Give 5 examples of greenhouse gases
A
Water vapour, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane and CFCs
7
Q
How are nitrous oxides produced?
A
Released from animal waste, used for fertilisers for crop.s
8
Q
Describe the greenhouse effect.
A
- Sunlight passes through the earth’s atmosphere
- The ground warms up and heat is emitted from the Earth’s surface
- Some heat escapes into space but most is absorbed by greenhouse gases
- Heat is re emitted and the earth’s atmosphere warms up
9
Q
Give 3 effects of the greenhouse affect
A
- drought, flooding
- change in global weather patterns
- polar ice caps will melt
