GEOLOGY - CHAPTER2 (AUGITE) Flashcards
It has also been identified in many stone meteorites. Some of these meteorites are thought to be pieces
of Mars or the Moon that were launched into space by large impact events.
AUGITE
so called “father of German geology,” discovered and
named augite in 1792.
Abraham Gottlob Werner,
means shine or luster,
due to augite’s vitreous luster.
Greek word “auge,”
is common in silica-poor rocks and various other dark-colored igneous rocks, as well as igneous rocks of
intermediate silica content. It also occurs in some metamorphic rocks formed at high temperatures
(1,065°F/575°C or above).
Augite
does not have any physical, optical, or chemical properties that make it especially useful. It is therefore
one of the few minerals that has no commercial use.
