General anesthetics Flashcards
isoflurane
commonly used, potent anesthetic
is less blood soluble than halothane
potent ventilatory depressant
maintains CV properties
sevoflurane
potent anesthetic is less blood soluble than isoflurane pleasant smelling anesthetic that is not irritating to the airway commonly used in pediatrics patients rapid induction, rapid recovery minimal cardiac effects
desflurane
potent anesthetic
contraindicated in brain injuries due to increased sympathetic activity (inc CO and BP)
respiratory irritant and respiratory depression
rapid emergence
nitrous oxide
incomplete anesthetic insoluble in blood good analgesic not respiratory irritant doesn't sensitize heart to catecholamines and doesn't increase intracranial pressure
thiopental
ultrashort acting barbiturate, making it useful in induction
fast actions on the brain followed by complete distribution to inert tissues (sk. m.) means quick induction and quick recovery
ketamine
NMDA receptor antagonist
appear to be awake, not awake
stimulates sympathetics
etomidate
GABA antagonist
hypnotic agent used only in induction
causes adrenal suppression
propofol
similar to thiopental but quicker
indicated in patients undergoing quick procedures
peripheral vasodilation and hypotension
