Gender
Behavioral differences between males and females that re culturally based and socially learned
- not reducible to biological differences
- Sex = biological difference
- Influenced by family, religion, peers, mass media, and schools
- sex= gender = cis-gender
Gender Roles
The actions or behaviors that are considered appropriately “masculine” or “feminine”
Gender Norms
Societal expectations for each gender
Doing gender
- individuals see to perform gender in accordance with what society expects
- Walking like a male/female
Gender Expression
- How we portray our gender to everyone around us
Heteronormativity
- people fall into distinct genders with natural roles in life
Gender and Healthcare
Men= 77 years, women = 82 years
men have more chronic health issues (cancer/bloodpressure)
Women have more acute (flu, cold)
Men: 1) heart disease, cancer, injury, stroke, diabetes, suicide, flu, alzheimers, chronic liver disease
Women: 1) heart disease, cancer, chronic respiratory illness, stroke, alzheimers, injury, diabetes, flu, kidneys, septicemia

Feminism
First wave: 1920s, suffrage
Second Wave: 1950/60-90 feminist mystique (femininity stereotypes were bad for women)
Third Wave: 90s-present, feminist and make whatever choices you want
LGBTQ
queer = umbrella term for weird sexually

Rape is pervasive and normalized
