gender schema theory-EVAL Flashcards

Q

one STRENGTH of the GST is that it has reserach support.

*Study found that a children UNDER age of 6 MORE likely to remember gender consistent (girl playing with doll) pictures than they were gender inconsistent (girl with gun)

Findings show good recall for gender CONSISTENT pics, but when gender inconsistent the findings were DISTORTED so that the EXPECTED sex was remembered.

A

This SUPPORTS GST as young children were already looking towards (seekig) gender consistent and inconsistent behaviours BEFORE kohlberg suggested this would happen.

Also supports GST as they had CHANGED images to fit with their existing SCHEMAS which gst SUGGESTS.

Q

FURTHER research SUPPORT for the GST.

Little Martin found that children UNDER 4, who showed NO signs of gender stability or constancy, demonstrated STRONG sex-typed behaviours and attitudes.

A

This therefore SUPPORTS GST as we do NOT need to have either constancy or stability to be able to SEEK out behaviours and developed stereotypes, as suggested by Kohlberg.

Findings suggest we ONLY need IDENTITY to seek out behaviours and develop stereotypes which is what GST says.

Q

a STRENGTH of GST is that it can ACCOUNT for gender DIFFERENCES in streotypicallly gender appropriate behaviour.

A

E.g. CULTURES which have TRADITIONAL views on gender e.g. women are NURTURING and men have CAREERS will raise children to have a SCHEMA which is the SAME.

However, in a culture where perceptions of gender are less RIGID, children would have more FLUID gender schemas to reflect that.

Therefore a positive is that it can EXPLAIN how GS are PASSED on between a member of society and also how CULTURAL differences come about.

This is in CONTRAST to psychodynamic approach which says that gender is DRIVEN by the unconscious BIO urges, lacking acknowledgment of cultural differences.
