Androgyny-EVAL Flashcards

1
Q

One STRENGTH is that the BSRI scale was developed by asking 50 males and 50 females to rate 200 traits of ho desirable they were for men and women, te hghestest 20 were then the traits. Piloted with 1000 students

A

This means when developing the SCALE it has HIGH internal validity as there sis LESS bias than if BEEN had devised it on her own. More OBJECTIVE using a sample of men and women.

1000 students said it CORRES{PNDED to their own description of their gender identity so it has INTERNAL VALIDITY as it measured what it was supposed to.

1000 high POP validity for students in terms of androgyny and measuring androgyny but lacks population for WIDER society.

Q

one STRENGTH of androgyny is that it allows people to handle situations in flexible ways

A

E.g. they can use appropriate MASC traits for some situations and FEM for others as they have BOTH. Also androgynous people are not SUPPRESSING themselves just to fit in with sex-role stereotypes.

HOWEVER this has been criticised as it suggested that those who have MORE masc traits are BETTER adjusted as they are more highly valued in an individualistic society. THis is socially sensitive as it suggests that there are MANY people who aren’t going to be well adjusted and have NO choice in this as it’s deterministic.

Q

one issue with the BSRI was that it was based on US american views in the 1970’s.

A

This is an issue as it is ETHNOCENTRIC to generalise behaviours from one country to another, creating a BETA BIAS which minimises the difference culture has on our behaviors and views which LOWERS the internal validity of the study as we may only be able to apply findings of the BSRI to the US.

the USA is also an INDIVIDUALISTIC country so behaviours may NOT realte back to collectivist countries , so results of the BSRI will be affected and may lead to a beta bias minisming differnes betwee cultures.

TEMPORAL VALIDITY is low as people may not agree on the adjectives today.

Q

one ISSUE with the BSRI is that it is a QUANTITATIVE SELF-REPORT measure

A

This means its open to D.C’s such as social desirability bias as ppts can rate themselves higher or lower than what is actually true. Questions whether we’re measuring BSRI as intended, lowering the IV.

se-report method is also SUBJECTIVE, what may be aigh score to ne may not be to another. Therefore lowering the IV of the BSRI as a measure of androgyny, cannot be sure what we are measuring.

Q

one issue with the BSRI is that it may be REDUCTIONIST

A

Takes complex issue of gender and reduces it down to a single SCORE. Gender is much more than just a rating score of words, it involves interests/ways of life. Therefore this overlooks it and is therefore reductionist
