- distress that may accompany the incongruence between one’s experienced or expressed gender and one’s assigned gender
- Distress may come from unavailability of desired physical changes via hormones and/or surgery

posttransition - individual has transitioned to full-time living in desired gender and has undergone (or preparing to have) at least one cross-sex medical procedure or tx

GD in children
Incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and assigned gender, for 6+ months
6+ (must include 1st):
-strong desire to be the other gender or insistence that one is the other gender
-cross-dressing
-strong preference for cross-gender roles in make-believe play
-strong preference for stereotypically opposite gender toys, games, activities
-strong preference for playmates of other gender
-strong rejection of typical toys, games, and activities associated w natal gender
-strong dislike of one’s sexual anatomy
-strong desire for prim and secondary sex characteristics
Associated w clinically significant distress or functional impairment
Gender Dysphoria in Adolescents and Adults
Incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and assigned gender, for 6+ months
2+:
-incongruence bw one’s experienced/expressed gender and prim and/or second sex characteristics
-strong desire to be rid of current 1 or 2 sex characteristics
-strong desire to be of other gender
-strong desire to be treated as other gender
-strong conviction that one has the typical feelings and reactions of the other gender
Associated w clinically significant distress or functional impairment
Specifier for GD in children and in adolescents and adults
-w/ a disorder of sex development
(eg congenital adrenal hyperplasia - genetic disorders that affect the adrenal glands - or androgen insensitivity syndrome (XY w/ female physical traits)
