gender diverse federal employees experienced harassment compared to cis women and men
What is gender-segregated work (on exam)?
concentration of women and men in different occupation, jobs and place of work (impacted by stereotypes)
- women over represented in clerical work
- men over represented in natural science
What is the difference between pay equity and employment equity?
PE - wages reflect worth of a job not the gender or race of the worker (raises value of work preformed by women)
EE - strategy to eliminate the effect of discrimination/ fully open job competition opportunity to those excluded (move women into higher paying jobs held by men)
What is the difference between paid work and family work?
PW - work for a wage or salary
FW - unpaid work such as housework, childcare and kin care
- norm: women do both
- combination of both is called double day or the second shift
What are the 2 main factors explaining the remaining gender wage gap?
- distribution of women and men across industries
- women’s overrepresentation in part-time work
What is white privilege?
inherent advantages possessed by a white person based on race in a society characterized by racial inequality
- no meant to feel guilt or to give up certain privileges
What is the scapegoat theory?
frustration-aggression theory, suggests that the dominant group will displace their unfocused aggression onto a subordinate group
What is racism?
implies superiority of one social group over another based on biological or cultural characteristics
What are the elements of racism?
- prejudice
- ethnocentrism
- stereotyping
- discrimination
What are the 4 types of racism?
- overt (making public statements about the inferiority of member of racial group)
- political (attempt to disguise a dislike of others through behavior that outwardly is non-prejudicial (white people get employed more than black))
- subliminal (unconscious criticism of minorities)
- institutional (made up of rules, procedures and practices thar directly and deliberately prevent minorities from having full and equal involvement in society)
What is the healthy immigrant effect?
immigrants coming to Canada have superior health status compared to those born in Canada
