Gender stratification
a division in society where all members are hierarchically ranked according to gender.
Gender Roles
constellations of rights, duties, attitudes, and behaviors that are culturally associated with each gender.
Factors which increase a womens status
womens contribution to material welfare, womens control over key resources, kinship centered around women (matrilineal); and residence is matrilocal.
Factors which lowers a womens status
political hierarchies, intensive agriculture, improtance of warfare, kinship centered on males and male residence patterns.
Gender Inequality
Men and women have unequal positions in terms of power, status (prestige) and wealth.
Gender ideology
thoughts and values that legitimize gender roles, statuses, and customary behavior.
Male gender bias
a preference found in some societies for sons rather than daughters.
Female infanticide
the killing of female children. sex-selective abortion.
Nutritional deprivation
a form of child abuse involving withholding food; can reatrd learning, physical development, or social adjustment.
Honor killings
a practice found in various middle eastern cultures where by women ared put to death at the hands of their own family members bc they ared thought to have dishonored the family.
Dowry Death
The killing of a wife by her in-laws if the wifes parents fail to pay additional dowry.
Transgender
“umbrella term” used to describe a wide variety of people who transgress traditional gender notions.
transsexual
desire to physically alter their body to match their perceived gender identity.
intersexual
individuals borm with some combination of male and female sex characteristics.
