GCSE Plant Transport Flashcards
What is the formula for photosynthesis?
CO2 + H2O —> glucose + O2
What is the xylem?
Vascular tissue made of dead cells that pulls water from the roots to leaves via transpiration
What do magnesium ions produce?
Chlorophyll
What do nitrate ions produce?
Amino axids
Why do the stomata open and close?
To let CO2 in and let O2 + H2O out
What is transpiration?
The loss of water from the leaf via evaporation and diffusion through the stomata
What is water cohesion?
The attraction of water molecules due to slight + and - attraction between hydrogen and oxygen atoms
State three tissues in all 3 plant organs
Epidermal, xylem, phloem
Why do leaves need water?
To stay turgid and support plant structure
Why is transpiration important?
The plant needs new minerals from the water from the roots
How does wind speed affect the rate of transpiration?
Higher wind speed = more transpiration. Wind keeps air dry, maintaining a steep water concentration gradient
How does temperature affect the rate of transpiration?
High temp. Gives water vapour more kinetic energy, increasing rate of diffusion
How does humidity affect the rate of transpiration?
If water concentration in air is higher than in leaf there will be less transpiration
How does light intensity affect the rate of transpiration?
When there is low light intensity there is less photosynthesis so stomata open less frequently to get CO2. This causes less water vapour to be lost
How to calculate stomata density
Count number of stomata and multiply by 1/FOV area
