GCSE Digestive System Flashcards
What does amylase break down?
Starch into glucose
What does protease break down?
protein into amino acids
What does lipase break down?
Lipids into fatty acids and glycerol
Where is amylase produced?
Salivary glands, pancreas, small intestine
Where is protease produced?
Stomach, pancreas, small intestine
Where is lipase produced?
Pancreas & small intestine
What is the function of bile?
Emulsifies lipids
What is the function of HCl in the stomach?
Kills pathogens, gives optimal pH for enzymes
What is an enzyme?
A biological catalyst
What is a substrate?
The substance an enzyme acts upon
What are the two jobs enzymes carry out in the digestive system?
Catabolic (breaks down) and anabolic (puts together) reactions
What is an enzyme-substrate complex?
When the substance binds to the enzyme’s active site
What must substrates be to fit into an enzyme’s active site?
Complimentary
What does specificity mean?
Enzymes can only catalyse one type of reaction
What is the lock and key mechanism?
When the substrate fits into the active site
