Things to look for - face gastro exam
Eyes:
-“Could I just get you to pull your eyelids down please”
-Jaundice of the sclera
-Pallor of the conjunctiva
-Kayser-Fleischer rings
Mouth:
-Overall dentition
-Glossitis
-Leukoplakia
-Angular stomatitis
-Gingervitis
-ulcers
Face:
Hand hygiene
Palpate parotid glands for enlargement, Unilateral or bilateral
Jaundice of the sclera
yellowing of the white bit of eyes
Pallor of conjunctiva
pale inside of the eyelid
Kayser-Fleischer rings
copper deposits around the iris that appear as brownish-green rings.
sign of Wilson’s disease
Glossitis
inflammation of the tongue can be too white or too red
Leukoplakia
White blobs on the sides of the tongue
Ulcers
look like ulcers, can ask a patient to pull down the bottom lip so you can see the inside side of it
Angular stomatitis
cuts or marks at corners of lips
Gingervitis
Gum inflammation
real big and red
Palpating parotid glands
-“I’m just gonna feel the side of your face for some glands is that okay?”
-feel the sides of the face near the ears slightly below but go up and down to make sure
-will only be able to feel in enlarged
-check if enlargement is unilateral (one side only) or bilateral
-“Parotid glands are not palpable suggesting they are not enlarged”
