Etiology of gastritis

A

Breakdown in gastric mucosal barrier allowing HCl acid and pepsin to diffuse back into mucosa results in tissue edema

A
Drug related (NSAIDs, corticosteroids)
Diet: alcohol use, spicy foods
Helicobactor pylori
Environmental
Diseases/disorders (autoimmune gastritis, crohn's, hiatal hernia)

Acute manifestations

A

i. Anorexia
ii. Nausea and vomiting
iii. Epigastric tenderness

A

a. Based on symptoms
b. History of drug or alcohol use
c. Endoscopy with biopsy
d. H. pylori testing
e. CBC (check for anemia)
f. Stool for occult blood
