Acute bronchitis caused by
viruses
pollution, chemical inhalation, smoking, chronic sinusitis
Acute bronchitis symptoms
Cough (worse @ night) Clear/purulent sputum headache fever malaise dyspnea chest pain
Treatment goals of bronchitis
i. Cough suppressants, oral fluids, humidifier
ii. B2-agonist inhaler—wheezing or underlying pulmonary condition
iii. Avoid irritants
iv. Prevent pneumonia & infection
v. Influenza—antivirals within 48 hours
whooping cough
pertussis
bordetella pertussis
Stage 1 pertussis
(1 to 2 weeks): low-grade fever (99-100), runny nose, watery eyes, general malaise, and mild, nonproductive cough, MILD UPPER RESPIRATORY SYMPTOMS
Stage 2 pertussis
(2 to 10 weeks): paroxysms of cough (severe fits of coughing)
Stage 3 pertussis
(2 to 3 weeks): less severe cough, weak
clinical setting: diagnostic
nasopharyngeal cultures, PCR of nasopharyngeal secretions, or serology testing
Treatment of pertussis
macrolides or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole
Antibiotics
