Gastritis Flashcards
1
Q
What’re the 3 types of gastritis?
A
Autoimmune (type A) Bacterial (type B) Chemical type (C)
2
Q
What is type A and what does it do?
A
Autoimmune Organ specific Autoantibodies to parietal cells and intrinsic factor Atrophy of acid secreting epithelium -decreased acid secretion -Loss of intrinsic factor
3
Q
Side effect of type A?
A
Pernicious anemia
-loss of intrinsic factor
4
Q
What causes type B?
A
Helibacter Pylori
5
Q
Describe H.Pylori and its mechanism of action
A
Gram -ve
Spiral shaped
Microaerobic, flagellated
Found on gastric mucosa of epithelium, doesn’t penetrate further
Increases acid production by:
-secretes a little ammonia on surface of gastric epithelium
-stomach secretes more acid to get rid of the ammonia
-pH is lowered and there’s more acid than at the start
6
Q
What causes type C?
A
NSAIDS
Alcohol
Bile reflux
7
Q
Dx/Ix of H.Pylori
A
Non-invasive
- serology
- urea breath test
- stool antigen test
Invasive
- histology
- -gastric biopsies stained for bacteria
- culture of gastric biopsy
- rapid slide urease test
