Gametogenesis Flashcards
1
Q
Give the steps in female gamete formation
A
- Primordial germ cells (PGCs) differentiate to oogonia
- By mth 3, oogonia in fetal ovaries generate primary oocytes
- Primary oocytes enter meiosis I but arrest at prophase
- Resume prophase during menstrual cycle
- Meiosis II completed only when oocyte fertilized
2
Q
Outline oocyte formation
A
- 5th mth of prenatal development, no. germ cells in ovary approx 7mil
- Primary oocytes remain in prophase and dont finish meiotic division before puberty
- At puberty a pool of growing follicles established
- Every mth 15-20 recruited to pass through maturation
- Follicle stages:
Primary (prenatal)
Secondary (antral)
Pre-ovulatory
3
Q
Outline ovarian cycle
A
- 1 follicle reaches full maturity
- LH surge causes pre-ovulatory growth
- Meiosis I occurs
- Secondary oocyte receives most of cytoplasm (resulting in polar bodies)
- Meisis II occurs
4
Q
Outline spermatogenesis
A
- Induced at puberty in response to LH surge
- LH promortes testoterone secretion by leydig cell
- Testosterone binds to sertoli cells to promote spermatogenesis
- FSH binds to sertoli
- Spermatocyte develops into spermatid
- Process of transforming spermatid into mature spermatozoa called spermiogenesis, and takes approx 64days.
5
Q
What is the function of sertoli cells?
A
- Support germ cells
- Provide nutrition
- Assist spermatozoa release
