Backstory
Messianic Jews preaching to Gentiles that they need circumcision and to follow the Torah to receive Jesus as Messiah
Chapter 1
Greetings. Astonishment at the Galatians accepting another gospel so quickly. Anyone who preaches another gospel is cursed.
Paul received it directly from Jesus in Arabia and Damascus for 3 years.
Chapter 2
After 14 years went back to J-town and was approved by the apostles in how Paul brought the gospel to the Gentiles.
Paul opposed Peter in Antioch because we are justified only by faith in/of Jesus (16)
2:16
Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through the faith of Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law.
2:20
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Chapter 3
Abraham justified by having faith. Jesus fulfills the law and opens the blessings of Abraham to the Gentiles. The law was like a temporary guardian for an heir who wasn’t ready yet. But in Christ we are heirs/Abrahams offspring.
3:28
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Chapter 4
The Spirit testifies that we are God’s children by our hearts knowing God as our Papa. It makes no sense after this to start observing the law because it acts like everything Jesus did and fulfilled didn’t happen.
Chapter 5
How will non-Jews learn God’s ways without the law? Through life in the Spirit and keeping “in step” with the Spirit. Contrasting works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit.
5:1
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
5:8
This persuasion is not from him who calls you.
5:13
[D]o not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
5:16
Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
5:22
The fruit of the Spirit is…
