Gait Flashcards
Where is the center of gravity located?
5cm anterior to S2 vertebra
When is center of gravity highest?
Midstance
What are the phases of the gait cycle?
- Stance: Initial contact, Loading Response, Midstance, Terminal Stance, Preswing
- Swing: Initial, Mid, and Terminal Swing
What are the six determinents of gait?
- Pelvic rotation, Pelvic lateral excursion, Pelvic tilt
- Knee flexion, knee mechanisms
- Foot mechanisms
What muscles are active during initial contact?
Eccentric contraction of gluteus max, gluteus medius, quads, hamstrings, and dorsiflexors
What muscles are active during the loading response?
Eccentric contraction of gluteus medius, quads, hamstrings, and dorsiflexors
What muscles are active during midstance?
Eccentric contraction of gluteus medius and plantar flexors
What muscles are active during terminal stance?
- Eccentric: gluteus medius
- Concentric: hip flexors, plantar flexors
What muscles are active during preswing?
- Eccentric: quads
- Concentric: hip flexors, plantar flexors
What muscles are active during initial swing?
- Eccentric: hamstrings, quads
- Concentric: hip flexors, dorsiflexors
What muscles are active during midswing?
- Eccentric: hamstrings
- Concentric: hip flexors, dorsiflexors
What muscles are active during terminal swing?
- Eccentric: hamstrings
- Concentric: dorsiflexors
How is base of support defined?
distance between heels with gait (normally 6-10 cm)
what actions define loading response?
heel strike to contralateral toe off
what actions define midstance?
contralateral toe off to ankles aligned
