g+ rods Pyogranulomatous exam 2 Flashcards
which of the pyogranulomatous bacteria are aerobes?
nocardia, dermatophilus, rhodoccus. the only one that isnt is actinomyces
which bacterium is a G+ short rod that looks like pink spit when it grows on blood agar?
rhodococcus
what causes lumpy jaw. pyogranulomatous osteomyelitis of mandible or maxilla
actinomyces bovis
actinomyces, spp. can cause two things that are secondary to trauma
abscesses, and serositis (serous fluid)
what causes peritonitis? this is tomato soup in the thoracic cavity
Nocardia spp
nocardia spp. causes what? (3)
peritonitis, abscesses, and bovine mastitis
Dermatophilus congolensis
ruminant and horses rain scald, grassy heel. scabs and lesions
Cellulitis/lymphadenitis? what causes it and to who?
Rhodococcus equi. happens to barn cats around horses. abscesses with draining tracts
Rhodococcus equi causes what in horses?
rattles. bronchopneumonia high mort/b. also joint changes
which two G+ pyogranulomatous rods cause abscesses?
actinomyces and nocardia
how can you tell the difference between actinomyces and nocardia (i.e: if there is G+ rod abscess)
actinomyces is facultatively anaerobic, and nocardia isnt. grow on anaerobic agar.
which of the pyogranulomatous bacteria can you treat with penicillin?
actinomyces and dermatophilus
what causes bronchopneumonia ? in what species?
rhodococcus equi. horses.
what causes bovine mastitis? what is prog?
nocardia. poor pathogen. cant cure
which of the pyogranulomatous bacteria are facultatively intracellular?
rhodococcus and nocardia. makes them difficult to treat.
