Clinical Pathology Flashcards
Three types of anemia
hypoplasia, hemorrhage, hemolysis
erythrocytosis
increased PCV. Also known as polycythemia
if you see hyperchromasia, this could be an artifact from what three things?
lipemia, hemolysis, or Heinz bodies
What does HCT measure
the percent of blood volume that is filled with RBC
HGB vs MCHC
total hemoglobin in the blood vs hg concentration within RBC
MCV
average volume of circulating RBC
What is the PCV threshold for severe anemia in dogs and cats
24 for dogs and 23 for cats
what can cause macrocytosis
storage of a sample: Causes rbc to swell
Reticulocytosis
Rbc agglutination: Scanner sees these as one cell
Metarubricotysis
increased nucleated RBC. Usually a sign of bone disease/damage
Reticulocytosis suggests what?
iron deficiency
If you take a blood sample one hour after an acute hemorrhage, what would you expect to see on the cbc
drop in HCT and reduced total plasma protein. No change in retic# yet.
What could be seen in a blood smear of a patient with iron deficient anemia
hypochromic cells
Poikilocytosis-schistocytes
Thrombocytosis- increase in platelets
Microcytosis
Hemolytic anemia signs
Inc Bu
Increase Retic#
Pink plasma
Blood smear could show ghost cells or spherocytes- no central palor
