Fungicides Dr. Shokry Flashcards
which fungicide do we see toxicosis with most
pentachlorophenol (PCP)
What is most common form of intoxication by pentachlorophenol
inhalation (used as wood preservative) of fumes or licking treated wood
RUP - No longer used for building materials in barns
properties of
toxicity of pentachlorophenol
chlorinated hydrocarbon:
lipid soluble, not persistant in water, swage or soil d/t bacterial decomposition
moderately toxic
incr temp, oily or organic solvent vehicles incr toxicity
toxicokinetics of pentochlorophenol
readily absorbed from GIT, inhalation & intact skin
wide distribution incl CNS w not to long 1/2 life
metabolized by conjugation to glucuronic acid (remember cats are deficient in this therefore…stays around longer in cats)
glucuronides excreted in urine
MoA of pentochlorophenol
uncouples oxidative phosphorylation ⇒ blocks/decr ATP
leads to overheatins, metabolic acidosis & dehydration & seizures
CS of pentachlorophenol toxicosis
acute & chronic
can be peracute death
lesions of pentachlorophenol toxicosis
rapid rigor mortis, local irritation of skin & mm
pulmonary congestion & edema, dark blood
pathognomonic lesions:
hyperkeratosis of skin in chronic cases
tx for pentachlorophenol toxicosis
px
no spec antidote
detox & supportive
if animal survives for 24h fair chance for complete recovery
