Fungal medications MOA Exam 1 Flashcards
Allylamines & Benzylamine
target the fungal cell membrane; inhibit the enzyme squalene epoxidase (squalene monooxygenase), thereby inhibiting ergosterol synthesis. Ergosterol is a key component of the cell membrane in many fungal organisms
Azoles
target the fungal cell membrane; disrupts fungal cell mitotic spindle, thereby halting fungal cell division;
inhibits lanosterol from being converted to ergosterol
Polyenes
target the fungal cell membrane; bind ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane causing pore formation that leads to increased membrane permeability and rapid cell death
Amphotericin B
Bind to ergosterol and make a hole in the cell membrane
Nystatin
Bind to ergosterol and make a hole in the cell membrane
Griseofulvin
Inhibits fungal cell division
Flucytosine
Inhibits DNA and RNA synthesis
Terbinafine
Inhibits squalene to being converted to squalene epoxide
Echinocandins
Inhibits beta glycan synthase (beta glycan needed for cell wall)
