Fundamentals of flight Flashcards
What is motion?
The act or process of changing place or position
What are three types of motion?
- linear(moves in a line or same direction)
- angular(moves in a circle)
- general(combo of both)
define force
something that causes change in the motion of an object
Define inertia
Willingness of an object to remain at rest or to continue in motion unless acted upon by an outside force
Define acceleration
Rate of change of the speed and velocity of matter w/ time
Define Velocity
Quickness of speed of an object in a given time and direction
Define speed
Rate of movement in terms of distance measured in an allotted amount of time
Newtons first law?
An object at rest will remain at rest an object in motion will continue in motion
newtons second law?
an object moving with uniform soeed is acted upon by an external force, then change of motion.will be directly proportional to the amount of force &inversely proportional to the mass of the object moved
newtons 3rd law?
for every actin there is an equal and opposite reaction
bernoullis principle?
When a fluid flowing through a tube reaches a constriction or narrowing of the tube, the speed of the fluid passing through the constriction is increased & pressure is decreased
Define lift
Force that acts in an upward direction to support the aircraft in the air
Define weight
Force of gravity acting downward on the aircraft & everything on the aircraft
Define drag
Force that tends to hold an aircraft back
Define Thrust
The force developed by the aircrafts engine & it acts in the forward direction
Longitude
the imaginary line running down the center of aircraft
Latitude
imaginary line running parallel to wings
vertical
Imaginary line running top to bottom of aircraft
ailerons control what axis?
longitudinal
Elevators control what axis?
lateral
Rudder controls what axis?
Vertical
What does the cyclic stick do?
Tilts plane forward,aft or sideways
what does the tail rotor do?
Counteracts the torque of main rotor by increasing/decreasing the amount of horizontal thrust the tail rotor produces
Define flap
Creates extra lift by lengthening the top section of the wing resulting in max. lift to reduce takeoff runs & landing rollout
define spoiler
used to decrease or spoil wing lift by destroying the smooth flow of air over the wing surfaces
define speed brakes
Hinged of moveable control surfaces used for reducing the speed of an aircraft
Define slats
Moveable control surfaces attached to the leading edge of the wing
Define an airfoil
Air that creates lift
Whats the difference between a fixed wing airfoil and a helo airfoil?
A fixed wing pulls air through the engine creating thrust to lift the plane. Helo pushes air down through the rotors to lift up
Define collective
Lift may be changed by collectively increasing the angle of attack or pitch of the rotor blades
Define AOA
The angle at which the airfoil or fuselage meets a flow of air
Define autorotation
Method of allowing a helicopter to land safely from altitude w/o using engine power
Explain the basic aircraft hydraulic system
- A reservoir to hold a supply of hyd fluid
- A pump to provide a flow of fluid
- Tubing to transmit the fluid
- A selector valve to direct the flow of fluid
- An actuating unit to convert the fluid pressure into useful work
What are the components of landing gear?
- Shock strut assembly
- tires
- wheel brake assembly
- retracting and extending mechanism
- side struts and supports
What is autorotation?
Method of allowing a helicopter to land safely from altitude w/o using engine power
