Firefighting fundamentals Flashcards
What is a firefighters primary and secondary duty?
Primary-save lives
secondary-stop fires
what are the key elements of a fire?
oxygen,heat,fuel
What is a fire tetrahedron?
The addition of a fourth element makes the triangle become a tetrahedron
What are the four classes of fire?
Alpha-burning wood,ash,materials,cloth
Bravo-gasoline,jet fuel,oil & petroleum based powder
Charlie-electrical
Delta-magnesium & titanium
Explain the extinguishing agents for CLASS A CLASS B CLASS C CLASS D
CLASS A-water & AFFF
CLASS B-AFFF,pkp,halon 1211,carbon dioxide
CLASS C-Energized-CO2,Halon,PKP,& H2O in fog patterns with min. distance of 4ft
CLASS D-H2O
What is AFFF?
Synthetic flourocarbon surfactant materials that are non-corrosive & have unlimited shelf life when stored in a protected area
Explain water as a firefighting agent
Not considered to be a suitable agent for use in combating large aircraft fires w/o addition of other foam agents (CLASS A FIRES)
What is HALON 1211?
(CLASS B &C FIRES)Colorless, faintly sweet smelling, electrically nonconductive gas that leaves no residue cleanup
How is carbon dioxide used as a firefighting agent?
(CLASS B &C FIRES)Colorless, odorless gas that approx. is 1 & a half times heavier than air
what is pkp?
(CLASS B FIRES) Potassium bicarbonate & dry chemical extinguishes flame by breaking combustion chain
