Functions of the skeletal system Flashcards
what do red blood cells do?
carry oxygen
what do platelets do?
they are used for clotting and healing
what do white blood cells do?
they protect against infection
what are the different functions of the skeletal system?
-protection
-support
-blood cell production
-movement
-mineral storage
how does the skeletal system protect the body?
-some of our body parts, such as the brain, are very delicate and need protection
-bones can protect internal organs from impact and injuries
how does the skeletal system support the body?
-the skeleton acts as a framework
-gives the body support, enabling us to stand
how does the skeletal system produce blood cells?
-some bones contain red bone marrow
-this is where red and white blood cells are produced
how does the skeletal system help with movement?
-muscles needs strong points to attach to and pull on when they move
-they are firmly attached to bones by tendons
-the joints of the skeleton let the body move
-they work with bones and muscles to form levers
how does the skeletal system store minerals?
-bones store calcium, phosphorus and magnesium
-these minerals are vital for developing and maintaining strong, healthy bones, needed for exercise
what connects bone to bone?
ligaments
what connects muscle to bone?
tendons
what is the process called when cartilage turns to bone?
ossification
