Functions Flashcards
Parent function
The simplest function within a specific family; y equals X is the parent function for linear equations
Linear expression
And expression that does not contain any exponents
Order of operations
PEMDAS: The set order in which multi step equations must be solved: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, and division, Addition, and subtraction
Parallel lines
Lines that never intersect (coplanar). They have slopes that are congruent
Function (in math)
A special type of relation we are each input has only one output
Functional transformation: vertical compression
A functional transformation where the function slope becomes more shallow
Perpendicular lines
Lines that intersect at a right 90° angle. They have slopes that are opposite reciprocals, meaning there’s signs positive or negative are opposite and their fractions are flipped
Relation (in math)
A relationship between sets of values. In math, the relation is often between X values inputs and wide values outputs, and can be represented as a set of ordered pairs, a table of values, a mapping diagram, or a graph.
Direct variation
He relation between ex and YN which why equals a constant K times X
Sup formula
A fraction used to calculate slope, with the change in Y values in the numerator and the change in X values in the denominator
Functional transformation: vertical translation
A functional transformation where the function shifts up or down along the Y axis
Mapping diagram
Hey diagram showing a relations inputs and their corresponding outputs using arrows
Distributive property
A number in front of a group of terms will multiply all terms in the grouping individually
Like terms
Terms with the same variable an exponent combination
Functional transformation: horizontal translation
A functional transformation where the function shifts right or left along the X axis
Inverse variation
A relation between XNY in which Y equals a constant K times the inverse of X
Linear equation: double intercept form/standard form
A linear equation in the form aX + BY = C, where a, B, and C are Constants. The x and Y intercepts are quickly to determine by setting the other variable to zero.
Linear relationship
A relationship with a constant rate of change that creates a straight line when graft
Combine like terms
A method of simplifying an algebraic expression by adding or subtracting the coefficient of the liked terms
Vertical line test
A method for examining the graph of a relation to determine whether or not the relation is a function; pass a vertical line through all the points of the graph, and if the vertical line passes through more than one point of the graph at the same time, the relation is not a function
Linear equation: slope intercept form
One way to write a linear equation y=Mx+b where the product of the slope M and the variable X are added to the Y intercept be
Functional transformation: vertical stretch
A functional transformation where the functions slope becomes more steep
Proportion
A statement that you ratios are equivalent
Functional transformation: vertical reflection
A functional transformation where graphs mirror images flipped across the X axis
