Q

Compensatory + environment method (eating+drinking)

A

Person:
- good upright sitting posture

Equipment:
- non-slip mat
- adapted utensils (enlarged handle, bended, foam handle around forearm)
- Universal Cuff (who have limited control of their hands)
- Plate guards (limited wrist rotation)
- Lidded or insulated cups, or cups with straws, especially when drinking hot liquids
- Cups with anti-tremor insert devices; products with a narrow neck and top (to limit spills) and a non slip base (easier to place on a work surface with uncontrolled movements)

Environment:
- reduce clutter
- good lighting
- reduce distraction at meal time

Q

Compensatory + environment method (Bathing/showering)

A

Person:
- sitting instead of standing

Environment:
- shower chair
- transfer bench
- handheld shower-head
- grab bar
- non-slip mat
- long handled sponge
- Wash with pump soap instead of bar soap. Bar soap is hard to hold and can leave a dangerous, slippery film on the floor

Q

Compensatory + environment method
(Dressing)

A

Right clothing:
- easy to on and off such as sweatshirts, sweatpants with elastic waistbands

  • Choose clothes that are front fastening with Velcro or large buttons or large zipper rings
  • Velcro strapping or rubber band for easier unfastening
  • Slip-on shoes
  • larger shoes to fit the swelling
  • Bras which attach at the front (front-clasping) are easier to attach

Adaptive equipments:
- button hook, dressing stick, zipper pulls or sock aid helper

  • socking aids
  • shoe horn
  • long handle reacher

Q

Compensatory + environment method (Medication administration)

A
  • Use pillbox to pack drugs in different time slot
  • Set alarm/schedule in watch, mobile or tablet computer as reminder
  • Self-talk e.g. Did I take medication this afternoon?
  • Place the medicine/pillbox in a distinct place where easily noted

Q

Compensatory + environment method (Public transport)

A
  • Plan a route as simple as possible
  • Mental rehearse on the planned route before outing Prepare a written note of the route as an in hand reminder
  • Self-talking e.g. Is the next station I need to get off ?
  • Use of technology e.g. apps of public transport, google map, etc.
  • Avoid busy time
  • Leave home when medication is most effective and return before off phase

Q

Compensatory + environment method (Bed mobility)

A

silky pajamas (or sheets) useful in bed, as it can make it easier for them to move during the night, which can help to stop them from waking

side rails

17
Q

Compensatory + environment method (Cooking)

A
  • Use kettle with whistle to remind for water boiling
  • Use electric kettle to avoid fire
  • Separating preparation time and cooking time in 2 time slot to alleviate fatigue
  • Visual cues in kitchen as reminders
  • Install an water tap with ergonomic leverage
  • Avoid handling hot water/oil by self, set the containers in the sink to avoid spilling while pouring
  • Use both hands to pour with arms properly supported
  • Simplify the cooking procedures by microwave
  • Mentally rehearse before start to cook
  • Use of recipe cards as cue cards during cooking
  • Self-talk to raise the awareness of the ongoing steps of the task e.g.What I should do in the next step?
  • Place frequently used objects between eye/ shoulder level and waist level
  • To remove heavy items from oven, place a trolley beside the oven and lift item with two hands onto it, then do a second lift onto work surface (metal trolley is preferable due to risk of burning or marking wooden trolley).
  • Rocker knives make cutting food easier, by limiting the degree of movement needed
18
Q

Compensatory + environment method (Computer use)

A
  • Keyboard and mouse modifications, to adjust the sensitivity and speed of response
  • Alternatives to a standard mouse, such as a tracker ball
  • Consider the impact of seating and ergonomic set up of the workstation being used
  • adapted plug
  • ‘Big button’ telephones
  • voice recognition system to control the computer and telephone
19
Q

Compensatory + environment method (Home maintenance)

A

Mopping:
- Use robotic vacuum with mopping function
- Spin dry mop instead of using hands to wring dry the mop

Door opening:
Doorknob Extender (become lever shape; struggle with grabbing and twisting doorknobs)

20
Q

General principle when considering activity modification (4R)

A

Remove (Use alternative methods to
stop doing the task altogether)

Replace (Change the method of performing the task by replacing it with another equipment / tool / method)

Reduce (Reduce the frequency,
duration, exertion or awkward positions by changing the method of performing the task)

Rest (Take regular breaks in between tasks or break tasks up into different parts)
