Fuels for ATP resynthesis Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 4 fuel sources for ATP resynthesis?
A
- Phosphocreatine
- Glycogen
- Fats/ triglycerides
- Proteins
2
Q
Phosphocreatine (5 points)
A
- Resynthesise ATP in the first 10 seconds of exercise.
- Stored in the muscle cells alongside ATP for rapid access.
- Limited stores.
- Dietary sources= red meat + fish.
- Main source of energy for the ATP-PC system.
3
Q
Glycogen (6 points)
A
- Stored in the muscles and liver.
- Needs to be broken down into glucose before it can be broken down to release energy for ATP resynthesis.
- Used in both absence and presence of O2.
1) Anaerobic (60 secs- 3mins)
2) Aerobic (infinity) - Glucose= soluble form of glycogen found in the blood.
- Dietary sources= complex carbs/ starches.
- Main energy source for Anaerobic Glycolytic System.
4
Q
Triglycerides/ fats (6 points)
A
- Muscular stores of fat.
- Only work in the presence of glycogen due to unreliable pace.
- At rest + endurance events it produces 2/3 of the body’s energy needs.
- 2x more energy than glycogen.
- Requires 15% more O2- predominantly used in aerobic activities.
- Main energy source in Aerobic systems.
5
Q
Proteins (5 points)
A
- Growth and repair of muscles.
- Last energy source to be used (emergency rations).
- Only used when glycogen and triglyceride stores have become depleted.
- 5% of the bodies energy needs.
- Dietary sources= meats/fish/dairy.
