Q

What is the agonist?

A

The Agonist (Prime mover) is the muscle that contracts to control the movement.
- It can be either isotonic or isometric
- The agonist can be eccentric!
- There can be more than one agonist involved in a movement if more than one joint is involved.

Q

Isotonic muscle contractions

A
  • This involves movement of the muscle.
  • It can either be:
    1. Concentric- muscle shortens during contraction.
    2. Eccentric- muscle lengthens during contraction.
      - Braking action
      - Often involves gravity.

Q

Isometric muscle contractions

A
  • This involves a muscle that is under tension but their is no visible movement.
  • Also known as a static contraction.
