Q
What is the agonist?
A
The Agonist (Prime mover) is the muscle that contracts to control the movement.
- It can be either isotonic or isometric
- The agonist can be eccentric!
- There can be more than one agonist involved in a movement if more than one joint is involved.
7
Q
What is the antagonist?
A
The antagonist is the muscle that works in opposition to the agonist.
- Remember muscles work in pairs.
8
Q
Isotonic muscle contractions
A
- This involves movement of the muscle.
- It can either be:
- Concentric- muscle shortens during contraction.
- Eccentric- muscle lengthens during contraction.
- Braking action
- Often involves gravity.
9
Q
Isometric muscle contractions
A
- This involves a muscle that is under tension but their is no visible movement.
- Also known as a static contraction.
