Altitude training Flashcards
1
Q
Where does it occur?
A
- High altitude (2500m +).
- Lower concentration of O2 in the air.
2
Q
Why is it good?
A
- Benefit aerobic system.
- Increase endurance levels.
3
Q
What happens at 5000m?
A
- The partial pressure of O2 decreases by 50%.
4
Q
What happens when there is a lack of O2?
A
The body has to compensate:
1. Breathing more deeply and quickly.
- attempt to increase blood concentration levels.
- HR increases.
- deliver more O2 to the working muscles.
5
Q
Advantages
A
- Increased blood volume/ haemoglobin concentration.
- Oxygen carrying capacity of blood increases.
- Increased performance during endurance events.
6
Q
Disadvantages
A
- Difficult to train- lack of O2.
- Altitude sickness.
- Psychological: homesickness, motivation levels decrease.
