Friday Test_28 Flashcards
What actually affects sin?
free choice of will
What are occasions of sin?
external circumstances-persons, places or things-which tempt one to sin
What are the types of occasions of sin?
proximate or remote, necessary or free
What are internal sins?
completed within heart of man w/o being revealed externally
What are the three internal sins?
deliberate pleasure, sinful joy, evil desire
What is deliberate pleasure?
sinful complaceny taken in an evil object presented to man by his imagination but which is not accompanied by any desire for the object?
Why is deliberate pleasure used?
will freely lingers in this evil complaceny even though it’s only momentary
When is complaceny attributed to deliberate pleasure?
only in the evil object presented by the imagnination
What is “complaceny unaccompanied by desire?
because if desire is present then complaceny assmes an additional moral evil
What are the four objects man may take pleasure?
external act itself (e.g. fornification), external act as protrayed by the imagination (e.g. not an act of fornication that has taken place already or one which is about to take place but the representation of the act existing in the imagination), the skillful and subtle way an act is performed (e.g. picking pockets), the knowledge that man posseses evil acts (e.g. moralist may take pleasure in being to show the intrinsic evil of fornication)
What is the first form of pleasure?
sin itself present in the external act
What is the second form of pleasure?
deliberate pleasure of object and is the same evil character as the act which forms its object
What is the third form of pleasure?
not itself evil, though often dangers
What is the fourth form of pleasure?
lawful, even praiseworthy, if right intention
What is the principle regarding deliberate pleasure (DP)?
to take DP in an object of the imagnination which is gravely sinful is itself a mortal sin whose species is determined by the object itself and circumstances
Why is such a DP a mortal sin?
an evil imagingation and its evil object possess from the moral aspect the same essential wickedness, since the external act doesn’t increase morality e.g. delight in adultery differnt than delight in incest
What is sinful joy?
deliberate complacency in something evil done by oneself or others
What does sinful joy consist of?
approval of sin already committed and therefore has the same malice as the sin itself
What is evil desire?
deliberate complacence in some sin not yet committed, or the longing to do something morally evil
When is evil desire efficacious?
represents a firm and genuine resolve to commit sin
What is evil desire inefficacious?
it is a wish unaccompanied by a firm resolve
Is an efficious desire to commit an evil act the same species and malice as the external act which forms its object?
yes
Why is an efficacious desire to commit an evil act the same species and malice as the external act which forms its object?
enitre malice of a human act is based on the evil will of man, and the external act itself does not add new morality
Why is an inefficacious(conditional) desire to commit some evil always detestable?
imagination is incited and time is wasted
