Framing Systems Flashcards

1
Q

What is framing?

A
  • A construction of structural members.

- Its purpose is to resist load generated on the hull.

Q

What is a transverse framing system?

A
  • The oldest type of framing system.
  • Consists of vertical stiffeners which go from the deck beams to the floor supported by beam knee brackets.
  • This system is used for ships under 90meters.

Q

What is a longitudinal framing system?

A
  • Longitudinal beams are used to stiffen the shell structure by application of horizontal bulb plates.
  • Transverse webs are used to support the longitudinals.
  • This framing system is used on vessels greater than 90meters.

Q

What is a combined framing system?

A
  • where both longitudinal and transverse systems are used.
  • Transverse in the cargo holds and longitudinals running the length of the vessel.
  • this system optimizes the structure of the vessel whilst undergoing load.
  • Minimize cost.

Q

Advantages of transverse framing system?

A
  • Resist Transverse stress such as raking.
  • Absorb vibration.
  • Easier construction of complex shapes.
  • Resists transverse and vertical buckling of plates.

Disadvantages of framing systems?

A
  • Heavier than longitudinal framing.
  • Ineffiecent use of material.
  • No longitudinal bending resistance.
  • No resistance to longitudinal buckling.

Q

Advantages of longitudinal framing systems?

A
  • Resist sagging and hogging
  • Lighter than transverse framing
  • More efficient use of material than transverse framing.
  • Resist longitudinal buckling of plates
